Absence from School
The Importance of Good Attendance
Regular attendance is crucial for pupils to achieve their full potential and make consistent progress in their learning. Missing school not only impacts a pupil’s academic development but can also affect their social skills and overall wellbeing.
To put attendance into perspective, consider the following approximations of learning time lost based on attendance percentages over a school year (assuming a standard 190-day school year and 6 hours of learning per day):
- Attendance of 95%: This equates to approximately 10 days or 60 hours of missed learning per year.
- Attendance of 90%: This equates to approximately 19 days or 114 hours of missed learning per year.
- Attendance of 85%: This equates to approximately 28 days or 168 hours of missed learning per year.
- Attendance of 80%: This equates to approximately 38 days or 228 hours of missed learning per year.
Even seemingly small reductions in attendance can lead to significant loss of learning time, which can have a detrimental effect on a pupil’s progress and attainment. At Allington with Sedgebrook Primary School, we prioritise attendance as part of our commitment to providing every pupil with the best opportunity to succeed. We work closely with families to support regular attendance and address any barriers to learning.
